I use the lounge, I have it setup on my server. I like that it can keep connections persistent. If your interested in an account let me know, I can set up an account based on your BBS account. Unfortunately, haven't had time to develop something to automatically take BBS user and add it to the lounge.

For Linux, at least, it would at least need continual development to support new Linux distros, and new versions of existing Linux distros.

I'm with you here. Especially with any software working across a network, at a minimum security updates should be a thing. I'm not sure it's necessary to keep development going full time, as long as someone can provide security updates.

Check out the self-hosted Web-based client TheLounge (https://thelounge.chat). If you have a place to run it, like maybe a NAS that's always on, it's pretty nice to use from any platform with a modern browser. It even does push notifications to mobile browsers. Also it makes it nice and easy to switch from computer to computer (or device or whatever).

The way I've got it set up is: SSL proxy -> TheLounge -> ZNC -> IRC.
