I'm using recent (2 weeks or so) dev binaries. When I try connecting to MRC, it connects and puts me in #lobby. When I try typing something in after a couple of minutes, MRC complains that I'm not in any room.
Any clues as to where to look?
Did you set up your username with MRC Trust on the server?
The Synchronet MRC client is supposed to automatically join the lobby on startup (as defined in mrc-client.ini under startup), but I think the relatively recent addition of MRC Trust on the server prevents the automatic joining from working all the time. I'm still trying to figure it out.
For now, I just always do a /join lobby any time I enter MRC, then I'm able to chat with others in there just fine. Try that and let me know how it goes for you.

It seems like it drops the room, after a few minutes I'll need to re-#join oom.

If you can be in the room for a few minutes, it's not related to MRC
Trust but most likely the keepalive not being sent by the client.
This issue must have been introduced recently in the code since this
check is in the server code for quite some time already.
I'll take a look to confirm if that's the case.

Ok, I see what is your issue. You cannot connect from 2 different
boards at the same time.
It will realign the message routing from the old board to the new board since the server is no longer broadcasting all messages to all boards.
Make sure to connect only from one source, let me know if this is still happening when using only one board at the same time.
